RIOTS DURING CAMPAIGN APPEARANCE IN CHIEMINGPolice must protect Greens

Katharina Schulze and Cem Özdemir were badly received in Chieming

Chieming – appearances in the marquee are usually a nice thing for politicians. This time that was not the case at all!

Bavaria's Green parliamentary group leader, Katharina Schulze, and the Green Federal Minister of Agriculture, Cem Özdemir, were badly received during an election campaign appearance in Chieming (Traunstein district) on Tuesday (August 1).

According to "Bayerischer Rundfunk", the tent was filled with 2,500 spectators - but many were not Green fans at all. On the contrary! Özdemir's speech was lost in protests. To be heard again and again in the audience: boos, whistles and “Get lost” choruses.

For security reasons, police officers even formed a police line between the podium and the audience.

According to BR, Özdemir tried in vain to calm the situation. "You don't have to agree with us," he called into the microphone. "That's the beauty of Germany, that's the beauty of democracy."

His suggestion: "You let me talk now, and after the speech I'll stay here. I'm not going to leave right away and offer that we can talk downstairs if you like."

Before the federal minister, the leader of the Bavarian Greens, Katharina Schulze, had already tried to make her voice heard. "Part of a culture of discussion is listening to one another," she called out to the crowd.

On Wednesday, Schulze told BR: "Even the day after, I'm still shocked by the nature of the argument." And: "I've often spoken in the beer tent. But I have never experienced such an atmosphere and, above all, such massive police protection.”

There were also families with children in the tent "who were really upset by this noise and these whistles". But she said to herself: "I won't let you drive me away." In the end, however, they "held our event, we talked about our topics.
